Phileena Heuertz has been a devoted practitioner of centering prayer for thirteen years. Having learned directly from one of the centering prayer architects, Thomas Keating, Phileena has studied under his wise guidance. Training includes two 8-day intensive retreats at Keating’s retreat center in Snowmass, CO.

Phileena has devoted much of her adult life to personal study of the contemplative tradition and spirituality in general, learning from Christian masters like John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, Thomas Merton, Bede Griffiths, Mother Teresa (having met mother personally in Kolkata and having served with her sisters there). Other teachers include interspiritual teachers Eknath Easwaran and Mirabai Starr; Buddhist teacher Michael Stone; and Hindu teachers Paramahansa Yogananda and Ramakrishna.

Additional training in Christian non-discursive silent prayer includes masters degree in Christian Spirituality from the Jesuit’s Creighton University and certificate in Spiritual Direction.

Phileena has also received training in pranayama and eastern meditation from the yoga tradition during her 200-hr yoga teacher training from Yandara Yoga Institute and subsequent continuing education in yoga. She is a regular practitioner and teacher of yoga.

Phileena has been teaching meditation formally for seven years, in which time she has given more than 50 contemplative retreats all over the world for religious and secular communities. Through retreats and public speaking, Phileena has introduced thousands of people to contemplative spirituality and nondiscursive/non-conceptual meditation.
